I am glad that John liked "District 9." I was pleased overall that D9 got so much distribution and advertising, usually movies I want to see are the ones no one has heard of.
"District 9" can be summed up as "Alien Nation" meets "MADOX-01."
Without changing the movie I think they could add a bit to that one scene where Wikus and Chris go into that building by having the woman there confronting her father and there being just happens to be an exo-suit and mini-tank there.
Those who do not like the shaky-cam should know that the documentary style goes away a third of the way in after the set-up is done.
D9 shows how to have an CGI character who is not annoying.
D9 also show not only is there no limit to the number of times people bits can splat against the camera, but it will be funny almost every time.
You should check out "The /Filmcast: Episode 63" where they talk about D9's production in some detail. Guest this week, "Fan boys" Director Kyle Newman, who in "After Dark" part talks about the crazy things went on in getting a cut version out to the public.

Also funny is the question How did James Cameron react when he heard D9 was a $30 million movie compared to his, reportedly, $450 million "Avatar?"
